Spring courses will be listed online. Albert is the online NYU system for course information and registration. Feel free to browse the listings to identify courses of interest. It is a good idea to note the five-digit class number for courses you wish to take. The class number is what you enter in Albert when you register.
Full-time vs. Part-time
Spring in New York students are welcome to attend part-time or full-time.
- Full-time is defined as 12-18 units (credits) per semester.
- Part-time is any amount less than 12 units per semester. The maximum number of units a student may take is 18 per semester.
International students must attend full-time (i.e. be enrolled in 12-18 units for the semester).
Spring in New York students may register for courses beginning Monday, November 28.
Students are responsible for their own course registration. You may register online via NYUHome and Albert. An instructional guide on how to use Albert and register for courses is available to all students and may be helpful to you as you learn the NYU system.
It is important to note that Spring in New York registration occurs after NYU student registration. Therefore, courses that are available earlier in the process may be full by the time Spring in New York students are able to register. You are encouraged to find alternative courses of interest in the course listings on Albert in case your first-choice course(s) is full. If a course you wish to take is full, you may place yourself on the waitlist or set up a course “swap” (see below).
Course prerequisites are listed in the course description on the Albert course listings. If you are unable to register for a course because of a prerequisite–you will likely receive an error message on Albert when this happens–you need to submit an enrollment request form to the Office of University Programs for approval to enroll in the course.
To access the Spring in New York Enrollment Request form, you must be logged into your NYUHome account. Once you have submitted your form, your request will be reviewed by your academic advisor. You do not need to contact University Programs regarding your form or request. We will follow-up with you via your NYU email with any questions or confirmation information.
Registering for a Waitlist and Swapping
Instructions on how to place yourself on a waitlist and/or set up a course swap are available in the Albert registration guide.
It is possible to place yourself on the waitlist for a course but not be enrolled into the course if a seat becomes available.
In order to avoid conflicting courses:
- Always use the swap function when signing up for a waitlisted course. If you do not use the swap functionality in Albert, but choose instead to individually enroll and waitlist yourself into courses, it is possible that you will not be enrolled into a course from the waitlist due to enrolling in more credits than allowed (the limit is 18 credits) or due to a time conflict between the waitlisted course and one of your enrolled courses.
- Enroll into your alternative selection first. If your primary selection is closed with a waitlist option (it will say “waitlist” on Albert), you should first enroll into your alternate or backup course. Then be sure to use the swap functionality when placing yourself on the waitlist for the course you would prefer if seats become available.
- Placing yourself on a waitlist does not guarantee that you will eventually be able to enroll into a course. As you continue to prepare for the fall, if you are on the waitlist for a course, it may be useful to begin looking at alternate courses. You can view all courses online via the link above. If you would like to view only open courses (i.e., those courses with seats currently available), please select “Open” from the “Open/Closed Classes” drop down menu on the right side of the course search screen.
Here are some additional tips if your first-choice course is currently waitlisted.
- Enroll in another course of interest. There are many great courses available, so explore the full list and find other courses that may be interest to you, or explore something new! You never know – you might discover a new subject of interest by delving into an unexpected course.
- Waitlisting is automatic. This means that Albert will roll the next person on the waitlist into the course if another student drops out and you meet the requirements outlined above. No one – not even the course instructor – can grant you permission to enroll in a course if it has an active waitlist.
- Students cannot sit in on waitlisted courses. Only students enrolled in a course are allowed to attend. This is due to the size of classrooms and the available seats.
Withdrawing from Courses
Spring in New York students are NYU students and must follow the policies of the University pertaining to withdrawing from courses. The course withdrawal schedule is set by the NYU Registrar. Please see the Tuition, Fees, and Financial Aid page for additional details.
Withdrawal deadline to receive a full 100% tuition refund: January 23
Withdrawal deadline to not receive a grade of “W” for spring semester courses: February 5
Students who withdraw from a course after this deadline receive a grade of “W” for the course.

Requesting Pass/Fail Grades
Students are allowed to request to take one course for a grade of pass/fail during the semester. To request a pass/fail, please submit a Pass/Fail Grade Request to your academic advisor. The deadline to request a pass/fail grade for the term is February 24
